This park is built on the site of the Hyndland Railway Station Terminus. It was the end of a spur line off the Partick to Anniesland railway line. The station closed in 1960. The railway infrastructure was removed over a number of years and station building was demolished in 1970. The forerunner of this park, an asphalt football pitch with landscaped surroundings, was opened in 1975.
Here's how the old terminus fitted with modern surroundings.
The much improved park which exists today is largely the result of lobbying, hard work and fund-raising by local volunteers who, in 2008, inaugurated the Friends of Old Station Park group, in liaison with the Parks Department of Glasgow City Council. The Parks Department continues the overall maintenance of the park, whilst the Friends develop planting and measures to encourage biodiversity.
The Friends of Old Station Park volunteer group exists to promote public use of the park and development of its environment. The Friends carry out planting and maintenance activities to keep Old Station Park as a vibrant asset providing a wildlife haven in the heart of Hyndland and encourage community involvement.
At our special General Meeting on 2nd November a new Constitution was unanimously approved.
The natural world will always fight to gain a foothold in an urban or post-industrial environment. In Old Station Park its Friends have followed a course of planting and upkeep to encourage biodiversity. In particular, wildflower habitats have been created to support bee species, butterflies and other insects.
We are a group of passionate individuals who are dedicated to maintaining and improving Old Station Park for the benefit of the local community and for increase in biodiversity. We hold regular meetings during the year, and generally control the activities of the Association; for example, the management committee is responsible for monitoring and controlling the financial position of the Association.
We are always looking for volunteers to help the Friends, and one way is to give up a little bit of time to join the Management Committee. There are currently three vacancies on the Committee. Why not get involved and make a difference in our community.
